A great musical spectacle that has to be seen to be believed.
What is the plot of Hamilton about?
Hamilton centres on the life of Alexander Hamilton. He immigrated to America in 1772 from the Caribbean as an orphaned boy with nothing apart from his intelligence, beliefs and the gift of his voice which led people to listen to what he had to say. He went on a journey in which he became a Founding Father of America.
When he goes to New York he meets with Aaron Burr, Hercules Mulligan, Marquis de Lafayette and John Laurens. Hamilton and Burr’s relationship results in jealousy as Hamilton is asked to become General George Washington’s secretary which is a job that Burr has wanted. Later on Hamilton meets the Schuyler Sisters to which he gets close to Angelica but at the same time Eliza expresses her love for him. As a result Angelica goes away and Hamilton gets married to Eliza. As she is pregnant Hamilton is dismissed from Washington’s circle due to aiding a duel in his name.
Hamilton and Burr then are lawyers to which Hamilton is asked to write letters to persuade people that a new constitution is required. As a result George Washington rehires him but this time he is responsible for the Government’s money yet Jefferson accuses Hamilton of spending too much money. As deals are done and new banks have been finalised yet Burr's anger increases due to jealousy due to Hamilton being given more entitlements than him. Therefore Burr will do anything to be in the room where it happens and becomes a member of the Democratic Republican group. On the other hand George Washington is the only US President who is not a member of any political group and during that time tensions took place. With tragedy to family members and numerous accusations Hamilton is left on his own.
Burr and Jefferson campaign against each other in order to be president and they ask Hamilton as to who he follows. Hamilton states that neither deserve to be even though he does not agree with Jefferson’s beliefs. After a while Jefferson is then made President and Burr becomes Vice-President. Jefferson does not want Burr and so asks Hamilton. Again Burr is made to feel that he is second choice in everything. As a result Burr challenges Hamilton to a duel.
What themes are explored in Hamilton?
The themes that are explored in Hamilton are immigration, love, marriage, politics, power, loss, war, jealousy, poverty, and America.
Cast
Shaq Taylor was sensational as Hamilton. He was crystal clear within the fast energetic beats that was coming out of his mouth. He did this with ease and panache. He conveyed everything about Hamilton with great precision including his vulnerable side with determination and a feisty arrogance. He had a likable stage presence with charm and wit.
Sam Oladeinde was incredible as Aaron Burr. What was surprising to learn was that he is a qualified Solicitor. He stood out in the role and he was a knockout on stage. He was faultless in every way that was emotive. I loved how he expressed his jealousy towards Hamilton.
Charles Simmons was brilliant as George Washington. He conveyed the role with every single bit of detail. He makes his presence known from the minute he stepped on that stage. He made the role his own and it was evident that he was a president. He was strong, powerful, and collected. His vocals were angelic but at the same time a powerhouse where his messages were loud and clear that were easily understood.
Billy Nevers was superb in the roles of Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. He stood out in both roles in terms of the personality and energy. The vocals were a battle of class between himself and Hamilton were exquisite.
KM Drew Boateng was amazing both as Mulligan and Maddison. He delivered them with gusto and ease. His performance was a class act bringing everything from comedic humour to honour.
Daniel Boys was impressive as King George. The way he portrayed the role was fresh and vibrant. He was spoilt and tyrannical but at the same time he brought a smile to your face every time he appeared on stage. In addition his stage presence was likeable oozing with charisma and wit. We cannot deny that his comedic timing was second to none.
DeAngelo Jones was spectacular in both roles as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton was magical and vibrant. His facial expressions and emotion gave you goose bumps.
Maya Britto was outstanding as Eliza. She was a true talent with a role that was layered with different emotions. It was breath taking to see how she developed from a young naïve rich girl to one of heartache. One of her highlights was the ending which proved that she was a strong determined woman despite the struggles that she went through.
Aisha Jawando was impressive as Angelica. She was strong, sassy and feisty. Her vocals were a knockout in the park. In addition her rap was performed at a record speed that was special to watch. She is a breath of fresh air.
Gabriella Benedetti was a star as Peggy Schuyler. Her facial expressions were gorgeous and she made the role her own as the unique one out of the trio. Her vocals were stunning powerful but yet angelic at the same time. This was particularly the case when she came on as Maria Reynolds.
This cast was outstanding. A talented group of people that all did their roles tremendously well. They all worked in unity regardless of how big or small their roles were. It was a true credit to watch.
Sets
The sets were simple but effective. The set was carved with wood with a balcony going along the back and the side of the stage open with pathways where the actors can listen and make use of every curve.
The use of props added an elegant touch such as the chairs, tables and barrels that formed an important part of the choreography.
The set changes seamlessly transitioned from one to the next so effortlessly. It added style and pizzaz to the production.
Costumes
The costumes were perfectly matched to the time period set in this musical but with a modern edge. This consisted of a beautiful collection of undergarments such as breeches, waistcoats, and corsets. These costume choices made this historical show more accessible.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack of Hamilton was impressive in that it covers most musical genres in one production. Rap, Jazz, Pop, RNB, Blues, Opera and more.
Highlights included powerful ballads such as “Its Quiet Uptown†to the Jazz vibes of “The Room Where It Happenedâ€. In addition the powerful catchy “My Shot†to “You’ll Be Backâ€. Other songs not forgetting to mention were the opening number “Alexander Hamiltonâ€, and “Helplessâ€.
The music was brought to life with a live band and great orchestration.
Choreography
The choreography was stunning. Clean, slick and lavish moves. It was action packed with jaw dropping solo isolations, synchronised dancing to the beat, jumps and a ballet style of hip hop. It was faultless.
